Pranyama is the practice of breath regulation; in Sanskrit, “prana” means life energy and “yama” means control or ‘reining in’. Most people are familiar with the term pranayama as it is often used in yoga along with other practices like physical postures (asanas) and meditation (dhyana). Together, these practices are responsible for the many benefits of yoga, but pranayama has many benefits on its own as well.
Pranyama involves controlling the breath through different techniques. These specific forms of breathing exercises clear the physical and emotional obstacles in our body, so there is a better flow of prana, or life energy. These different techniques include:
-Deep breathing with ratios
-Fast breathing
-Alternate Nostril Breathing
-Circular breathing
